NEABI from PPGDH welcomes indigenous researcher

In day 27 March 2026, a STUPID- Center for Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous Studies, linked to the Postgraduate Program in Human Development-PPGDH, the University of Taubaté, received Gabi Kariri, Master's student in Applied Linguistics at UFBA, which works in the teaching and study of indigenous languages, with emphasis on the languages ​​of the Tupi trunk. His speech was titled: Indigenous influences on the language, Brazilian culture and literature. The event was held in the building of the Department of Social Sciences and Education at UNITAU, where NEABI monthly meetings are held. NEABI is coordinated by Profa. Drag. Mírian Cristina de Moura Garrido, permanent professor at PPGDH, Coordinator of the Affirmative Action Center and Vice-President of the Permanent Commission on Ethnic-Racial Relations. The Center and the Commission are linked to the Student Dean's Office of the University of Taubaté.

Gabi Kariri develops research focused on indigenous didactics in teacher training, focusing on linguistic recovery and ethnic-racial education.

Belonging to Kariri ethnicity, the researcher works in the teaching and study of indigenous languages, with an emphasis on the languages ​​of the Tupi trunk and the resumption of the Dzubukuá-Kipeá language. Its work includes the production of teaching materials, in addition to holding workshops and lectures on decolonial education and appreciation of original cultures.

Graduated in Literature (Português) from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Gabi Kariri has also developed research with support from CNPq and the Portuguese Language Museum, expanding its activities in the field of indigenous languages ​​and pedagogical practices.

During the meeting, the researcher addressed the topic “Indigenous influences on the language, Brazilian culture and literature”, promoting reflection on the presence and importance of original knowledge in the country’s cultural formation.

The activity aims to expand the academic debate on diversity, inclusion and ethnic-racial education and integrates with the purpose of NEABI.

In addition to academic work, Gabi Kariri also develops literary projects, as a children's book “Chocolate with Cashew – Xocolatl sembohó Akaîu”, which presents elements of original languages ​​and contributes to the appreciation of indigenous identities. During your speech, Gabi Kariri showed the book and talked about its composition.

The event was open to the academic community and was attended by, in addition to NEABI members, from a class of the Postgraduate Program in Applied Linguistics, students of the Bachelor's Degree in History and the Postgraduate Program in Human Development.
