Action integrated teaching, research and extension in practical experience with analysis of Atlantic Forest areas
Biology students at the University of Taubaté (UNITAU) participated, in the days 24 e 25 of April, of a scientific initiation activity in Trabiju Park, in Pindamonhangaba. The action was coordinated by Prof.. Dr. Julio Cesar Voltolini and brought together undergraduate students, Master's degree in Human Development, teachers and even children from public schools.
During the two days, participants developed field studies focusing on comparing different areas of the Atlantic Forest. One of the regions analyzed has the greatest human impact, with vegetation in the process of regeneration after agricultural use in the past. The other area has more preserved characteristics, with more developed forest.
In both environments, students carried out activities such as bird censuses, analysis of tree size and observation of environmental factors, such as climate and light. The proposal was to bring students closer to scientific practice, allowing the direct application of knowledge acquired in the classroom.
According to the responsible teacher, the activity also contributes to student engagement throughout the course. “This activity, in addition to having the teaching aspect, also covers research and extension. Thus, students can experience, in practice, these three fundamental axes of the university”, highlight.
The program also included trails, field activities and overnight stay on site, providing an immersive experience to participants.
The initiative reinforces the importance of practical activities in academic training, especially in courses with a strong theoretical basis. By providing experiences in real study environments, the University expands student learning and strengthens the link between scientific knowledge and practical application.
Besides that, the action highlights the role of university extension in involving different audiences and bringing the university closer to the community, contributing to the training of professionals who are more prepared and connected with reality.
